Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the influence and factors that influence western culture on the existence of dance art in the city of Sibolga. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques use observation techniques, interviews, literature studies and photo publications. The results of the research show that traditional dances are still a characteristic of each region and are always preserved from generation to generation without having to worry about the number of modern dances today, because each dance has its own place and function. Traditional dance is still preserved and authentic by people who still love customs, such as the elderly, and modern dance has developed among the people of Sibolga City, as seen from the many requests from the public for modern dance performances by the CDC Studio. The conclusion of this research is that dance in Sibolga City has been influenced by western culture, and people's interest in modern dance is higher than traditional dance in Sibolga City. Researchers saw that the majority of dancers in the Cecek Dance Company (CDC) studio mastered modern dance more than traditional dance. This could happen because of the high demand from the public to perform this modern dance. Western culture easily influences the art of dance with globalization and this can also happen because the city of Sibolga has a variety of ethnicities and religions. The high level of tolerance makes people easily accept changes and the influence of western culture, especially among young people who feel that modern dance is more in tune with their souls. .
