Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the lexical meaning and cultural meaning contained in the oral tradition of makkobar boru at the wedding ceremony of Mandailing Batak community in Padang Lawas Regency. The object studied is the speech of makkobar boru. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis technique. The data sources in this study are informants, which consist of two main groups: traditional leaders, and bridal families who are directly involved in the procession. Data were collected through observation, video recording of the wedding procession, and interviews with traditional leaders and the bride's family. The data analyzed were 45 speech excerpts obtained from three villages in Central Barumun Sub-district, namely Pasar Binanga, Unterudang, and Siolip Villages. The results showed that makkobar boru speech contains lexical meanings loaded with Mandailing vocabulary that illustrates kinship, moral, and spiritual values. Culturally, the speech represents the Mandailing Batak community's view of life that upholds customs, gender roles, and harmony in the dalihan na tolu structure. This tradition is not only a medium of customary communication, but also a means of passing on cultural values to the younger generation.
