Abstract
Rice is a primary food source for nearly half of the global population, particularly in Asian countries. However, its vulnerability to post-harvest pests such as Oryzaephilus surinamensis during storage can result in significant losses in both quality and quantity of the product. This study aims to analyze the effects of rice form, both in whole grain and flour, on the growth and development of Oryzaephilus surinamensis across five rice varieties: white rice, red rice, black rice, glutinous white rice, and glutinous black rice. The methodology employed is a no-choice test in a laboratory setting, utilizing a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Observations are made on population parameters, including the number of eggs, larvae, pupae, and new imagos, with data analysis conducted using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at a significance level of 0.05. The results indicate that Oryzaephilus surinamensis exhibits higher growth on whole rice compared to rice flour, with whole white rice producing the highest numbers across all developmental stages. Conversely, rice flour, particularly white rice flour, shows the lowest counts at each stage, indicating a preference of the pest for whole rice forms. These findings provide important insights for more effective post-harvest pest management strategies.
