Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Cultural Adaptation of the Javanese Tribe and the Batak Tribe in Bandar District, Simalungun Regency”. This research alms to determine the obstacles to the language system in cultural adaptation. The theory used is cultural adaptation theory. This type of research observation, interviews and documentation were used. Data analysis techniques use data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this research conclude that in carrying out intercultural communication there are certainly varios obstacles, such as language and stereotypes (prejudice). Language is a barrier that is often encountered in intercultural communication, language differences make the communication that will occur not good. When someone wants to interact, especially a newcomer, of course their face and movements will be seen first. If their face looks friendly, they wiil definitely be chosen as the communicant. On the hand, if his face looks fierce, communication will certainly be avoided, bacause the immigrant community assumes that someone with a fierce definitely has a tough character and is far from frienly. Therefore, because of the obstacles that appear, communication becomes hampered. However, all of this must have a long process in order to establish good relations between cultures.
