Abstract

Sweet Corn (Zea mays L. Saccharata sturt) is a commodity that is popular with many people because it tastes delicious and sweet. The sweet taste is due to the high sugar content and low starch content. Sweet corn is usually consumed as processed vegetables, cornstarch and raw material for the corn sugar (flour) industry. However, corn cultivation is not always without challenges. One of the main problems faced in cultivation is competition with weeds. Weeds are nuisance plants that grow together with corn plants and compete with the main crop for resources such as water, nutrients and sunlight. Weeds that are not controlled properly can cause a decrease in yield and quality of corn plants. Control that can be done is by using herbicides and adjusting plant spacing. This research aims to determine the effect of oxyfluorfen herbicide and plant spacing and their interaction on weed growth and sweet corn production. This research used a factorial randomized block design consisting of 2 factors with 3 replications. The first factor is the herbicide dose (without herbicide application, dose 360 g/ha, 240 g/ha), the second factor is the planting distance (50 x 20 cm, 55 x 20 cm and 60 x 20 cm). The results of the research showed that there were 14 species of weeds that dominated eggplant plantations, consisting of ten species of broad-leafed weeds and three species of narrow-leafed weeds. The best dose of oxyfluorfen herbicide and plant spacing for the growth and production of sweet corn of the Bonanza variety is a dose of 360 g/ha and 240 g/ha with a plant distance of 55 x 20 cm and 60 x 20 cm. The herbicide dosage and planting distance are also among the best treatments for suppressing weed growth. The herbicide oxyfluorfen has an effect on weed growth and sweet corn plant production but has no effect on sweet corn plant height. Setting plant spacing affects the percentage of weed cover and eggplant production but does not affect the dry weight of weeds. There was an interaction between the application of oxyfluorfen herbicide and setting plant spacing on the dry weight of weeds aged 28 and 42 HST.
