Abstract

Sugar palm plant (Arenga pinnata) is one of the plants of the Palmae family (areca nut) which has high economic potential. Sugar palm plant seeds take a long time to germinate due to the dormancy period. Treatments that can be used to break dormancy are mechanical and chemical scarification methods. This research aims to determine mechanical and chemical scarification, as well as the interaction between these methods in solving sugar palm plant seed dormancy. This research was conducted from November 2023 to February 2024 in Ulee Reuleung Village, Dewantara District, North Aceh Regency and the Agroecotechnology Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Malikussaleh. This research was arranged in a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with two factors. The first factor consisted of mechanical scarification (M) of, M0=control, M1=sanding. The second factor is chemical scarification of this research, K0=control, K1=KNO3 0.5%, K2=KNO3 1%, and K3=KNO3 1.5%. The results showed mechanical scarification with sandpaper treatment can increase maximum growth potential, germination rate, growth speed, simultaneously growth, plumula and radicule length. In chemical scarification, palm seeds can increase the value of maximum growth potential, germination ratef, growth speed, growth simultaneously, plumula length, radicle length with the best concentration, namely KNO3 1% (K2). The best interaction is found in mechanical scarification (sanding) with chemical scarification of 1% KNO3 concentration (M1K2). Keywords: Palm Seeds, Dormancy Fracture, Mechanical Scarification, Chemical Scarification.
