Abstract

A city is a complex human organism characterized by population concentration and diverse activities, ranging from infrastructure, public services, and governance to social and economic functions. Kostof in Mirsa (2005) states that a city develops in groups, has territorial boundaries, various occupations, monumental identity, and consists of both people and buildings. The city image, as a distinctive identity of a city, needs to be explored to understand spatial character and public perception. This study aims to identify the image-forming elements of Kota Juang, the capital of Bireuen Regency in Aceh Province, using a descriptive qualitative approach through observation, government, and documentation. The findings reveal that the main paths include the Medan–Banda Aceh; Edges consist of rivers and railway lines; Districtsss encompass market, governmental, and educational areas; nodes are located at central intersections; and Landmarks include the Sultan Jeumpa Grand Mosque and the Kota Juang Museum. These elements shape the image of Kota Juang, reflecting a combination of economic activity, historical struggle, and religious cultural values. Therefore, collaboration between the local government and community is essential to preserve and strengthen the unique identity of Kota Juang in a sustainable manner.
