Abstract

ABSTRACT Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which can affect the lungs as well as extrapulmonary organs. According to the WHO, TB remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases worldwide and continues to pose a substantial global burden. Indonesia is among the countries with the highest TB case contributions. Pulmonary tuberculosis remains a major public health problem in Indonesia, including in Lhokseumawe City. The occurrence of pulmonary TB is influenced by agent, host, and environmental factors. Host factors play a crucial role in determining individual susceptibility to infection and disease progression. This study aimed to describe host-related risk factors among pulmonary TB patients in primary health centers within the working area of Lhokseumawe City. This study employed a descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach and a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through interviews using questionnaires and medical record reviews. Univariate analysis was performed. The results showed that most pulmonary TB patients were in the early elderly age group (51,6%). The majority of respondents were male (62,7%) and had primary-level education (55,6%). Most respondents had underweight nutritional status (54,8%), worked in miscellaneous occupations (35,7%), and had low income levels (94,4%). Regarding host-related risk factors, most respondents were non-smokers (58,7%) and had a history of close contact with TB patients (71,4%). Most respondents also had no comorbid conditions (82,5%). This study concludes that host-related risk factors play an important role in the occurrence of pulmonary tuberculosis. Promotive and preventive efforts tailored to individual characteristics are needed in primary health care services. Keywords: pulmonary tuberculosis, host, risk factors, primary health center
