Abstract

The uneven quality of law enforcement officers, both in terms of professionalism and integrity, often leads to abuse of authority and injustice in the legal process. In addition, the limited availability of facilities and scientific investigation tools, particularly in regional areas, frequently causes the criminal evidence process to become ineffective. Political and economic interventions also commonly influence the independence of law enforcement institutions, resulting in a legal system that appears sharp toward the weak yet blunt toward the powerful. In line with the evolving methods of crime, support from forensic science such as dactyloscopy (the study of fingerprints) has become an effective identification method to assist investigators in solving criminal cases, especially murder. Based on these considerations, this research aims to examine the position of fingerprints in the investigation process of murder cases as well as the obstacles and solutions encountered by investigators in its application. The research method used is juridical-empirical, employing field data obtained from several respondents and informants, and supported by secondary data analyzed qualitatively. The research results indicate that fingerprints (dactyloscopy) hold an important position as one of the evidentiary tools in the investigation of murder cases, especially for identifying suspects or victims when other physical evidence is limited. However, in practice, there are still obstacles such as the difficulty of obtaining fingerprints at crime scenes, limited supporting facilities, and the lack of expertise among forensic personnel. To overcome these obstacles, investigators need to enhance their technical skills through training, update identification equipment, and collaborate with relevant institutions to ensure that the investigation process runs optimally and accurately. It is recommended that the police continue to develop more advanced forensic technology, expand the national fingerprint database, improve investigator training, and strengthen cooperation with national and international forensic institutions. it is also recommended to increase the use of modern technology, secure fingerprint traces at crime scenes, and provide ongoing training for investigators to expedite and facilitate the identification process.
