Abstract

Abstract The cultivation of Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) faces various challenges, one of which is bacterial infection particularly those caused by Vibrio alginolyticus. Although antibiotics are commonly used to treat bacterial diseases, their application can lead to bacterial resistance and harmful residues for humans. Therefore, natural substances are increasingly explored as alternatives for preventing bacterial infections. Kersen leaves (Muntingia calabura) contain flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, which exhibit antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties capable of inhibiting pathogenic bacterial activity. This study aimed to determine the effect of kersen leaf extract, identify the clinical symptoms in sea bass infected with Vibrio alginolyticus, and evaluate the optimal dosage of kersen leaf extract for preventing infection. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and three replications. Statistical analysis of absolute growth and survival rate showed that treatment D was significantly different from treatments A and B, but not from treatment C. Clinical symptoms observed after the challenge test included abnormal swimming patterns, body darkening, fin erosion, reduced feeding response, and lethargy. The results indicated that a 15% concentration of kersen leaf extract effectively suppressed Vibrio alginolyticus infection, making it a potential natural feed additive to enhance disease resistance and support the growth of Asian sea bass juveniles.
