Abstract

Abstract. This study explores the working dynamics of package delivery couriers within the Gig economy system in Lhokseumawe City, focusing on two main aspects: the challenges of labor rights protection and the social impacts on work-life balance. The Gig economy offers job flexibility and opportunities for income generation without formal employment contracts. However, behind this flexibility lies significant vulnerability, including uncertain employment status, lack of social security, and the burden of personal operational costs, such as fuel and vehicle maintenance, which are entirely borne by the workers. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis involving couriers, logistics management, and customers. The findings reveal that couriers in Lhokseumawe operate under precarious conditions, facing fluctuating income, high workloads, and inadequate workplace safety support. Socially, their work negatively affects interpersonal relationships, family time, community participation, and both physical and mental health. This condition is analyzed using Labour Process Theory, which argues that beneath the appearance of autonomy, Gig work often entails rigid algorithmic control and modern forms of labor exploitation. The study concludes that while Gig economy jobs may provide employment opportunities amidst formal job scarcity, they also produce new forms of social and economic insecurity. Therefore, there is an urgent need for fair labor regulations and inclusive social protections, supported through collaborative efforts between the government, Gig companies, and academic institutions to ensure the well-being of Gig workers, particularly in smaller cities like Lhokseumawe. Keywords: Gig economy, courier, labor protection, work-life balance, social vulnerability Abstrak. Kata Kunci: Gig economy, kurir, perlindungan kerja, work-life balance, kerentanan sosial
