Abstract
This study aims to map and quantify carbon stocks within the mangrove ecosystem of Lhokseumawe City by utilizing remote sensing technology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The research highlights the ecological importance of mangroves as effective carbon sinks, which play a crucial role in mitigating the impacts of global climate change. To achieve this objective, Sentinel-2 satellite imagery from 2025 was combined with field-based measurements to estimate biomass and carbon stocks across different mangrove density classes. The methodological framework consisted of several stages, including field data collection, image preprocessing, supervised classification using the Maximum Likelihood algorithm, NDVI transformation, and accuracy testing with a confusion matrix. Biomass estimation was conducted by applying species-specific allometric equations in conjunction with NDVI values, which were subsequently converted into carbon stock estimates. The results revealed that the mangrove ecosystem in Lhokseumawe covers a total area of 104,08 ha. Within this area, sparse mangrove stands (26,27 ha) were estimated to store 101,69 tons C/ha, medium-density mangroves (39,46 ha) to store 1.026,74 tons C/ha, and dense mangrove stands (38,35 ha) to store 3.434,6 tons C/ha. These findings demonstrate a strong positive relationship between mangrove density and carbon storage capacity. Overall, this study provides valuable scientific evidence to support sustainable mangrove conservation and management policies in coastal areas. The integration of remote sensing and GIS not only enables efficient monitoring of mangrove ecosystems but also contributes to developing adaptive strategies for climate change mitigation through blue carbon management.
