Abstract

ABSTRACT Salmonella typhi is a gram-negative bacterium that causes typhoid fever, which remains a global health problem. The treatment used is antibiotics. The increase in antibiotic resistance has prompted the search for alternative treatments from natural ingredients, one of which is turmeric leaves (Curcuma longa L.). Turmeric leaves contain antibacterial compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, and saponins. The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial efficacy of turmeric leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of Salmonella typhi in vitro. This study was an experimental laboratory study with a post-test only control group design. Turmeric leaf extract was prepared using the maceration method with 96% ethanol and tested at concentrations of 60%, 80%, and 100%. The positive control used chloramphenicol, and the negative control used DMSO. The results showed that the average inhibition zone diameter at a concentration of 60% was 9.4 mm, which falls into the moderate category. At concentrations of 80% and 100%, the values were 14.3 mm and 17.3 mm, respectively, which fall into the strong category. The conclusion of this study is that turmeric leaf extract (Curcuma longa L.) exhibits antibacterial efficacy against the growth of Salmonella typhi in vitro, with significant differences observed at concentrations of 60%, 80%, and 100%. Keywords: Salmonella typhi, turmeric leaves, antibacterial.
