Abstract
Shear strength is an essential parameter in geotechnical analysis, as it plays a significant role in determining soil stability and bearing capacity under structural loads. To obtain soil shear strength values in the field quickly and efficiently, the Cone Penetration Test (CPT) method is employed, which provides parameters such as cone resistance (qc) and friction ratio (Fr). The objective of this study is to evaluate the correlation between CPT parameters and soil shear strength parameters, namely undrained shear strength (Su) and internal friction angle (ϕ). The data used were obtained from cone penetration test results at 27 locations along the Sigli – Banda Aceh Toll Road project. The calculation of Su refers to the correlation proposed by Lunne et al., while the ϕ values were estimated using the correlation from Kulhawy & Mayne. Furthermore, linear regression analysis was carried out using Microsoft Excel to examine the relationship between each CPT parameter and Su as well as ϕ, based on the coefficient of determination (R²). The analysis results indicate that qc exhibits a very strong correlation with Su (R² = 0.9097) and a strong correlation with ϕ (R² = 0.8425). In contrast, Fr shows weak correlations with both Su and ϕ, with R² values of 0.1635 and 0.1483, respectively. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that cone resistance (qc) is highly relevant for estimating soil shear strength in the field, while friction ratio (Fr) is more suitable as a supporting parameter in soil classification.
