Abstract
ABSTRACT Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) is a major pest of maize that causes significant damage and yield losses. Biological control using egg parasitoids offers an environmentally friendly alternative to suppress the population of this pest. This study aimed to explore and identify the species of egg parasitoids associated with Spodoptera frugiperda in maize cultivation areas. The research was conducted using an exploratory survey method with purposive sampling on farmers’ maize fields known to have a history of Spodoptera frugiperda infestation. Egg masses were collected from the field and reared in the laboratory until parasitoid emerged, then idendified based on morphological characteristics. The result showed that two species of egg parasitoid were identified: Telenomus spp. and Trichogramma spp. Among the collected samples, Telenomus spp. was the most dominan species, with a higher emergence rate compared to Trichogramma spp. These findings indicate that Telenomus spp. has greater potennsial as a biological control agent against Spodoptera frugiperda egg. This study provides preliminary information on the presence of natural parasitoids in maize agroecosystems, which can serve as a basis for the development of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies based on natural enemies.
