Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aimed to determine the effect of mechanical and chemical scarification on the viability and vigor of betel nut seeds. The research was conducted at the Agroecotechnology Laboratory and Experimental Garden of the Faculty of Agriculture, Malikussaleh University, from May to June 2024. The research used was two-factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD): scarification (consisting of no cutting, end scarification of seeds, and base scarification of seeds) and KNO3 concentration (0%, 0.2%, and 0.4%) with three replications. Observations include maximum growth potential, germination rate, growth rate, uniformity of growth, vigor index, seedling length, and root length. The research results showed that scarification had a significant effect on maximum growth potential, germination rate, uniformity of growth, growth rate, vigor index, and seedling length of the observed betel nut seeds. Soaking with KNO3 had a significantly different effect on maximum growth potential, germination rate, uniformity of growth, growth rate, and sprout length of the observed areca nut seeds. There is an interaction between scarification and soaking with KNO3 on germination power. Scarification treatment and the use of KNO3 can be used to aid growth and enhance the viability and vigor of areca nut seeds. Keywords: Sprouts, imbibition, scarification and KNO3 concentration.
