Abstract

ABSTRACT Chlorophyll-a is an active green pigment in plant cells that plays an important role in the process of photosynthesis in waters that can be used as an indicator of water fertility. Mentawai Islands Regency is the youngest regency in West Sumatra which is rich in potential fish resources for fishing. Estimation of Fishing Potential Zone (ZPPI) will be a solution for fishermen in estimating fishing areas so that fishermen do not use old methods that are considered inaccurate and not up to date to catch fish. Therefore, this research is carried out to provide a solution for fishing communities in maximizing the potential of marine and fishery resources by utilizing geographic information system technology or remote sensing. The use of ZPPI estimation is to conduct fishing areas through chlorophyll-a concentration and sea surface temperature distribution in the Mentawai Islands area. The purpose of this study was to see the distribution of chlorophyll-a and sea surface temperature using Aqua MODIS satellite imagery which is one of the components for estimating potential fishing zones (ZPPI) so that the location point for determining fishing areas (DPI) can be determined so that it can provide information to fishermen in the Mentawai Islands. This research was conducted in May-June 2024. There are two methods used in this study, the first is Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) interpolation to see the spatial distribution of chlorophyll-a and SPL data and the second is intersect which is the process of combining two data, namely Chlorophyll-a and SPL data which will produce point cuts which are potential fishing zones (ZPPI).
