Abstract

ABSTRACT Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is one type of vegetable plant originating from the Asian continent, especially India and Burma, generally eggplant is consumed by cooking. National eggplant production tends to increase every year but eggplant production in Indonesia is still low. One of the efforts that can be done in increasing eggplant production is by genetic improvement through mutation induction. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of concentration treatment and soaking time of Ethyl Methane Sulphonate (EMS) on morphological and agronomic diversity of purple eggplant. This study used Factorial Randomized Group Design with three replications. The main factor is the concentration of EMS which consists of three levels, namely K0 (0%), K1 (0.3%) and K2 (0.6%). The second factor is the length of EMS immersion consisting of three levels, namely L0 (0 hours), L1 (1,5 hours), L2 (3 hours). The results showed that the treatment of EMS concentration affected the variables of plant height, leaf length, leaf width and flowering age. EMS concentration decreased plant height, leaf length and leaf width, treatment (K0) was the best concentration while flowering age (K1) was the best concentration. The treatment of EMS immersion duration did not affect the observed variables except stem diameter 14 HST and number of fruits. L2 treatment is the best immersion duration on the variable stem diameter and L0 is the best immersion duration on the variable number of fruits. The interaction between the treatment of EMS concentration and EMS immersion time on the variable of stomatal width of upper leaves and stomatal width of lower leaves at 42 HST. K0L0 showed the highest value compared to other treatments. There were variations in eggplant fruit shape due to the treatment of EMS concentration and EMS immersion duration. The variations of fruit shape obtained are straight, straight and slightly curved, slightly curved, and sickle. Keywords: EMS, Concentration, Chromosomes, Mustang M1, Variety
