Abstract

ABSTRACT The variation in physical properties and soil carbon stocks can occur due to differences in elevation, slope position, and soil horizons. This study was conducted in the highland coffee plantations of Gayo, Bener Meriah Regency, from July to November 2023. Soil samples were taken from each soil horizon at the foot of the slope, middle of the slope, and top of the slope at four elevations: 700-715 meters above sea level (masl), 1000-1090 masl, 1300-1351 masl, and 1600-1616 masl. The results showed that the highest sand content was found at an elevation of 1300-1351 masl at the top of the slope, with a value of 44%, while the lowest sand content was at 700-715 masl at the foot of the slope, with a value of 6%. The highest silt content was found at 1300-1351 masl at the foot of the slope, at 71%, while the lowest silt content was at 1300-1351 masl in the middle of the slope, with a value of 16%. The highest clay content was found at 700-715 masl at the foot of the slope, at 70%, while the lowest clay content was at 1300-1351 masl in the middle of the slope, with a value of 14%. The highest bulk density was found at 700-715 masl in the middle of the slope, at 1.58%, while the lowest bulk density was at 1000-1090 masl in the middle of the slope, at 0.12%. The highest soil temperature was recorded at 700-715 masl at the foot of the slope, at 34.2°C, while the lowest temperature was at 1600-1616 masl at the top of the slope, at 18.3°C. The highest soil moisture was found at 700-715 masl in the middle of the slope, at 95%, while the lowest moisture was at 700-715 masl at the foot of the slope, at 70%. The highest soil carbon stock was found at 700-715 masl at the foot of the slope, at 84.56%. The lowest soil carbon stock was found at 700-715 masl in the middle of the slope, at 5.97%. The physical properties of the soil related to soil carbon stock are soil moisture. Keyword: Soil temperature, organic carbon, elevation, slope position
