Abstract

ABSTRAK Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus spp.) is a high-economic-value food commodity that is widely cultivated. The utilization of empty fruit bunches (EFB) of oil palm as an alternative growing medium is expected to reduce dependence on sawdust while increasing the utilization value of plantation waste. This study aimed to determine the effects of growing medium composition containing EFB, oyster mushroom species, and their combination on the growth and yield of oyster mushrooms. The research was conducted at Yonarhanud 5/CSBY Battalion, Dewantara District, North Aceh Regency, from April to July 2026, using a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two factors. The first factor consisted of M1, M2, and M3, containing 0%, 20%, and 25% EFB, respectively, while the second factor consisted of white oyster mushroom (T1), pink oyster mushroom (T2), and yellow oyster mushroom (T3). There were 27 experimental units with a total of 81 baglogs. The observed parameters included medium pH, pinhead emergence time, cap diameter, stalk length, number of fruiting bodies, total fresh weight, and moisture content. The results showed that growing medium composition significantly affected cap diameter at the first harvest, stalk length at the second harvest, and the number of fruiting bodies at the first harvest, but did not significantly affect pH, pinhead emergence time, number of pinheads, fruiting bodies at the second and third harvests, total fresh weight, or moisture content. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the use of oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) as a partial substitute for sawdust can be used as an alternative medium for oyster mushroom cultivation. Media composition with the addition of EFB up to 25% was able to support mushroom growth, while the medium containing 20% EFB provided the best fruiting body production in white oyster mushrooms. Further research is needed to optimize the EFB decomposition process so that its utilization as a growing medium for oyster mushrooms can provide more optimal results. Keywords: Baglog, mycelia, pinhead, fruiting body.
