Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aimed to analyze the morphometrics of swimming crabs found in the waters of Langsa – Tamiang City, and to identify their distinguishing morphometric characters. A total of 10 morphometric characters were determined. In male Portunus pelagicus, the highest body length (PT), body width (LT), and body weight (BT) characters were found at Station 4 (63.07 mm, 125.28 mm, and 130.73 mm), whereas the highest left claw length (PCKi), right claw length (PCKa), left claw finger length (PJCKi), right claw finger length (PJCKa), left claw width (LCKi), right claw width (LCKa), eye width (LM), standard carapace width (LKS), male abdomen length (PAJ), and male abdomen width (LAJ) characters were found at Station 3 (42.64 mm, 42.53 mm, 97.37 mm, 96.41 mm, 20.05 mm, 21.41 mm, 37.62 mm, 102.21 mm, 39.41 mm, and 42.61 mm). For male P. sanguinolentus, the highest PT, LT, BT, PCKi, and PJCKa characters were found at Station 1 (45.64 mm, 101.64 mm, 55.78 mm, 26.4 mm, and 63.95 mm), whereas the highest LCKi, LCKa, LM, PAJ, and LAJ characters were found at Station 2 (13.74 mm, 20.19 mm, 26.93 mm, 31.75 mm, and 39.90 mm), and the highest LKS character was found at Station 4 (78.31 mm). Meanwhile, in male Charybdis feriata, the highest PT, LCKi, LCKa, LM, PAJ, and LAJ characters were found at Station 1 (62.61 mm, 18.10 mm, 18.57 mm, 36.28 mm, 33.54 mm, and 30.72 mm), whereas the highest LT, BT, PCKi, PCKa, PJCKi, and PJCKa characters were found at Station 2 (88.25 mm, 125.58 mm, 35.44 mm, 35.40 mm, 82.62 mm, and 82.60 mm). The results of discriminant analysis showed that right chela width was the distinguishing character in male P. pelagicus. In contrast, body weight was the distinguishing character in female P. sanguinolentus, and eye width was the distinguishing character in male Charybdis feriata. No distinguishing character was found in female P. pelagicus, male P. sanguinolentus, and female C. feriata. Keywords: Morphometrics, Portunus pelagicus, Portunus sanguinolentus, Charybdis feriata, Langsa – Tamiang City.
