Abstract
ABSTRACT Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) is a commercially valuable marine fish widely cultured in Indonesia. Environmental differences among aquaculture sites may influence fish morphometric characteristics through variations in water quality. This study aimed to analyze the morphometric variability of cultured Asian seabass in Lhokseumawe City and evaluate the water quality conditions at different culture sites. The research was conducted in May 2026 at three floating net cage locations: Loskala (adjacent to mangrove forests), Pusong Lama (near the fish landing site), and Mon Geudong (adjacent to a coastal tourism area). A total of 30 fish samples were measured using 21 morphometric characters. Water quality parameters, including temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen (DO), were measured in situ. Data were analyzed using Cluster Analysis (CA), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Analysis Similarity Percentages (SIMPER), and Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA). The results showed that Asian seabass cultured at Station 3 exhibited larger morphometric dimensions, particularly in total length, standard length, body depth, caudal peduncle depth, several fin measurements, and body weight. PERMANOVA indicated significant morphometric differences among the three culture sites (p < 0.05). Cluster Analysis grouped Stations 1 and 2 together with approximately 96% similarity, whereas Station 3 formed a distinct cluster. Principal Component Analysis extracted five principal components explaining 81.31% of the total variation, with the first two components accounting for 61.38%. Body weight, total length, eye diameter, and head length were identified as the most influential morphometric variables distinguishing fish among the culture sites. SIMPER analysis further revealed that body weight was the primary contributor to the morphometric dissimilarity among culture sites, accounting for 70.67% of the overall dissimilarity with a dissimilarity value 6.54%, and consistently represented the main distinguishing character across all pairwise station comparisons. Water quality parameters at all stations remained within the suitable range for Asian seabass culture, indicating favorable environmental conditions for fish growth.
