Abstract
ABSTRACT Kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis) is an of the economically important pelagic fish species that plays a significant role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. Information on its feeding habits is essential to support sustainable fisheries resource management. This study aimed to analyze the food composition, frequency of occurrence, diversity, evenness, and dominance indices of the stomach contents of Euthynnus affinis landed at the Fish Auction Market of Lhokseumawe City. A survey method with purposive sampling was conducted at three fish landing sites. A total of 15 adult specimens were collected, and their stomach contents were examined microscopically. Data were analyzed using food composition, frequency of occurrence, Shannon–Wiener diversity index, evenness index, Simpson dominance index, and One-way ANOVA. The results showed that the stomach contents consisted of phytoplankton (30.3%), zooplankton (2.0%), and unidentified food remains (67.6%). Among the identified food organisms, phytoplankton was the most frequently recorded food item, with a frequency of occurrence of 100%, while zooplankton occurred in 26.7% of the samples. The diversity index ranged from 0.52 to 0.69 (low), the evenness index ranged from 0.47 to 0.63 (low to moderate), and the dominance index ranged from 0.50 to 0.74 (low to moderate). One-way ANOVA indicated no significant differences (p > 0.05) in the diversity, evenness, and dominance indices among the sampling sites. The high occurrence of phytoplankton was presumed to result from secondary ingestion, whereby phytoplankton was ingested indirectly through prey organisms. This study provides baseline information on the feeding habits of Euthynnus affinis which can be to support sustainable fisheries management in the waters of Lhokseumawe City.
