Abstract

ABSTRACT The role of parental guidance plays a significant role in the educational process of their children, particularly in shaping their attitudes and behavior. One important aspect of this guidance is preventing adolescents from engaging in risky sexual behavior. Amidst the development of technology and social media, dating behavior among Generation Z is increasingly open and different from previous generations, thus eliciting various responses from parents as parties who play an important role in the upbringing and formation of children's moral values. This study aims to determine parental attitudes towards the dating behavior of Generation Z in Aceh. This study uses a qualitative phenomenological approach involving four parents as research subjects selected through snowball sampling techniques, with the criteria of having children aged 16–30 years and residing in Aceh. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation, then analyzed using thematic techniques. The results of the study indicate that cognitively, parents view the dating behavior of Generation Z as influenced by social media, the social environment, and shifts in cultural norms. Affectively, parents show feelings of worry, concern, sadness, and discomfort due to concerns about the risks of sexual behavior, premarital pregnancy, and moral decline. In terms of interaction, parents take concrete actions in the form of social supervision, guidance, and social actions undertaken by the community. This study concludes that parents in Aceh tend to have attitudes that discourage dating behavior that violates religious and social norms, although some parents can tolerate interactions between men and women if they are conducted appropriately, responsibly, and do not violate prevailing societal values.
