Abstract

ABSTRACT Mud crab (Scylla sp.) is one of the aquatic organisms with high economic and ecological value and plays an important role in maintaining the balance of mangrove ecosystems. Human activities in the coastal area of Lhokseumawe City are suspected to affect the abundance and community structure of mud crabs. This study aimed to identify mud crab species and to analyze their abundance, diversity index, evenness index, and dominance index in the coastal waters of Lhokseumawe City. The study was conducted in June 2025 at three observation stations using a survey method. Sampling was carried out using crab traps (bubu). The observed parameters included species identification, morphometric measurements, abundance, community structure, sex ratio, and water quality parameters (temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen). Data were analyzed using ecological indices and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed that three species of mud crabs were found, namely Scylla serrata, Scylla paramamosain, and Scylla tranquebarica, with Scylla serrata being the dominant species at all stations. The abundance of mud crabs was classified as low, ranging from 12.698 to 21.913 ind/m². The diversity index was categorized as low, the evenness index ranged from moderate to high, and the dominance index indicated the presence of dominant species. Water quality parameters at all stations were within suitable ranges to support mud crab life. This study provides baseline information that can be used for sustainable management and conservation of mud crab resources in the coastal area of Lhokseumawe City. Keywords: mud crab, Scylla sp., abundance, community structure, Lhokseumawe coastal waters
